Thalay Bua Daeng
Thalay Bua Daeng means Red Lotus Lake or Pond in Thai. It is quite popular with the Thais as a recreation spot.
Location and Area
Thalay Bua Daeng is located in Kumphawapi District of Udonthani province, Thailand. Kumphawapi district is around 25 km south of Udonthani. While traveling from Sakon Nakhon Province it is around 120 Km.
Red Lotus Lake is in around 20000 rai or approximately around 4200 hectares of land. It is a fresh water lake filled with red lotus blooms in a huge area. It is very pleasant to watch the blooms especially in the months from December to mid February.
It is best accessible by cars and private buses. There are no government buses or vans to the lake. It is only accessed by private vehicles. There are several hundreds of private cars and buses particularly on holidays and weekends.
Boats and Fares
There are two types of boats for visitors to chose from.
1. Small narrow boats which accommodate 2 people. These Boats aren’t covered and better hired on cloudy days. These boats cost 300 baht and are very good especially if one wants to go very close to the blooms. These boats are narrow and move fast.
2. Big boats which accommodate up to 8 people. These boats are covered and provide shelter from on sunny days. These boats cost 500 baht each. These boats move at a slower pace compared to the small narrow boats.
The total journey takes around 60 to 90 minutes. One can sight cranes and other birds in the lake. By the time we reach the lotus blooms, it will be around 20-30 minutes.
The best time to watch the blooms is from 6 am to 8 am. In the afternoon the blooms close and also it will be quite hot. There are several restaurants and washrooms for the convenience of the visitors.On some long weekends it is very common to sight people from the near by country Laos.
